Questions on Arc'teryx Men's Alpha SL Waterproof Jacket
-
From Nick on 25/05/10
- Hi,
What would be the best layer system to wear underneath this jacket from the skin to the shell? Also bearing in mind that it will be worn in very cold environments and bad weather.
Cheers - Hi Nick, There are two types of layering I would recommend would be suitable for underneath an Alpha Jacket. You could try an Icebreaker Merino layering system, I would suggest a lightweight 150 weight Long Sleeve top like the Atlas, then maybe a 260 weight like a Tech Top. You could them look at a GT320 or Sport320 to wear on top of these and under the jacket. This would keep you warm as the Icebreaker layering works together to trap the warm air in cold conditions. The other layering system you could look at would be a synthetic range. A polypropelene base layer or something similar like the Earth Sea Sky First Layer you could then look at a 100 weight fleece layer ie The Nort Face TKA Glacier. A soft shell jacket could then be worn over these and under the outer shell.
I hope this helps.

From craig on 2/05/11
- Hi i am wanting to buy a ski jacket, by reading the info on the net everything points to sidewinder sv but because of cost and the shop doesnt stock them in wellington what about the alpha sl as we dont go in extreme conditions thanks craig
- Hi Craig, I have checked our system and it appears we have the Sidewinder Jacket available in Teak in Medium, Large and XLarge and they are on sale for $671.30. If you are still interested in this jacket I can organise a mail-order for you. The main difference between the Sidewinder and the Alpha SL is weight. The Alpha SL uses a 2 layer Gore-tex Paclite which is a very lightweight waterproof fabric which is ideal for alpine climbing and hiking, however the face fabric (outer layer) is not as durable as the Sidewinder. The Sidewinder uses a 3 layer Gore-tex Pro-shell which is heavier but it is more durable and ideal for snow sports. If you are interested in getting a sidewinder you can email me at web@bivouac.co.nz and I can organise a amilorder for you. Thanks Anita
