Technology
NanoShield: a proprietary breathable single-layer fabric. It's extremely water resistant: it has the highest water column rating of any breathable single-layer, single-wall fabric at 1700mm. Such as outstanding rating is the result of Black Diamond's exclusive Silicone Nanocell coating. This coating has a much lower volume than typical water-resistant coatings, allowing the fabric to remain superlight, soft and packable. Despite its thin profile, Silicone Nanocell is highly durable with impressive tear strength. It loses nothing in breathability to less weatherproof fabrics, boasting a Moisture Vapour Transmission Rate (MVTR) of 4300.
Care

Seam sealing: the silicone-based NanoShield fabric cannot be factory seam-taped. For use in rainy conditions, seam sealing will improve the waterproofness. For use primarily in alpine conditions, it is unnecessary to seam seal.
Must be stored dry. storing wet or damp will result in the growth of mildew, which will cause it to smell and leak. Mildew attacks the urethane coated parts and the nylon fabric, causing loss of strength and eventual breakdown. If you suspect mildew, act right away. Washing with McNett MiraZyme™ cleaner will usually stop and remove mild cases of mildew. Advanced mildew will not wash out. Mildew damage is not covered under warranty. Those living in wet climates should probably wash in MiraZyme™ once every two years, whether mildew is showing or not. Do not dry clean or machine wash. If lightly soiled, you can sponge the bivy clean with warm water. Never use detergents or liquid soaps of any kind.
To wash: if it becomes necessary to wash your bivy, avoid hot water, bleach, dishwashing liquid, or any type of liquid soap or detergent. Hand wash in a bathtub using only cool water and MiraZyme™, made by McNett Corp. This wash-in product cleans, eliminates odour and helps to remove mildew. It is available through Black Diamond Mail Order. Be sure your bivy is totally dry before putting it away. This may take 24 hours or more. DO NOT SPRAY OR WASH YOUR TENT WITH ANY WATER REPELLENTS OR CLEANING AGENTS OTHER THAN THOSE RECOMMENDED BY BLACK DIAMOND. Use of any other agents may void your warranty.
