Lorpen Tri-Layer Sock Technology

Ever had sweaty feet? Especially after an extended tramp, climb or skiing session? Uncomfortable, right? The build up of sweat causes an explosion of bacteria too and you will notice a distinctly unpleasant smell when you take off your socks. And if you're lucky you avoid Athlete's Foot (fungal infection) and/or painful blisters that sweating can cause.

Lorpen have spent years on this problem and have recently brought out a range of socks with revolutionary Tri-Layer Technology to manage your sweaty (and smelly) foot problem. 3 layers that quickly draw sweat from your skin to the outside of the sock keeping your feet comfortably dry. You will just have to try it to believe it.

Tri-Layer represents the evolution (some might say revolution) of knit technology, layering both synthetic and natural yarns in a way that improves moisture management, comfort and durability. Lorpen have developed a process that creates a sock with more density in the heel and toe and less density on top of the foot for premium fit and less bulk. Comfort is Lorpen's guiding principle.

Tri-Layer Technology in Action

All 3 layers are breathable

image shows the three layers in action

1. Inner Hydrophobic Polyester Layer:

(Hydrophobic = moisture repelling)

This layer captures your sweat without absorbing it and expels it towards the outer layers to keep your feet dry. This layer is made from CoolMax® or Pramaloft® Eco Yarn depending on which season the sock is intended for.

CoolMax® in the spring/summer socks - a fibre that has changed sweat management forever because it shifts moisture straight to the outside of the fabric where it can then easily evaporate

Primaloft® Eco Yarn in the autumn/winter models - an optimal mix of the lightest thermal insulator around and recycled polyester which gives an extremely smooth result with excellent moisture wicking and drying properties

2. Middle Natural Hydrophilic Layer:

(Hydrophilic = moisture absorbent)

This middle layer of natural fibre absorbs your sweat from the inner layer through capillary action and spreads it over a larger surface area on the outside of the sock where in contact with the air it evaporates. The moisture is stored in this hydrophillic layer until it is able to evaporate. Again, the fibre used is dependent on the which season the sock is intended for.

Tencel® in spring/summer socks - an extremely absorbent, highly ecological and environmentally friendly fabric that provides excellent body temperature regulation

Merino wool in autumn/winter socks - top quality wool from Merino sheep...smooth, comfortable, absorbs moisture and keeps your feet warm

3. Outer Nylon/Poylamide Layer:

A fibre highly resistant to abrasion and is placed in the sock's friction zones (such as the toe, heel and shin) to protect your feet from irritating rubbing footwear.

Women's Fit Socks

Because women's feet tend to be narrower than men's feet Lorpen has created a Tri-Layer Fit sock that features a multi-density knit. This unique knitting process makes the sock more open on the top of the foot so it doesn't feel bulky, and pormotes moisture release. These socks also feature a wide instep arch band to support higher arches and reduce foot fatigue.

Lorpen sock testimonials:

We received these reviews of the Lorpen socks we had last year after our Great Lorpen Test Walk (note that since these comments Lorpen have introduced gender specific socks):

I wore the Lorpen socks on the first day of the tramp and managed to avoid getting wet feet when crossing creeks. By the end of the day I noticed that my feet were surprisingly dry and so were the socks. So the next day I wore my standard socks with the idea of again trying to avoid getting wet feet - this I failed to do by the end of the day. However, before I got wet feet I was aware that my feet were damper than when compared with the Lorpen socks. The next two days I forgot about my old socks and stuck with the Lorpen socks, and even when getting my feet wet when crossing creeks, the Lorpen socks were not as wet as I would have expected when compared with my other socks at the end of the day. Another bonus was that the Lorpen socks were not smelly, even after three days of tramping, whereas my other socks were after only one day. Bill F.

Over the last few months I have tried out the Lorpen HIKING Midweight Merino Hiker socks for tramping in the Canterbury area. I like them, and recommend them for use out of the snow zone (except for short stints in summer), otherwise good for any season anywhere. They felt good, stayed up, cushioned, and kept my feet warm without getting overly hot. I only wash them in cold water, and with no ill effects to the socks. Warwick D.

Please note the socks have stood up well after a lot of use including indoor use without shoes on. The pair being used have had approximately 400 hours use and have not even thinned on the heels or showed any signs of stretching. I will be buying more and recommending to others. Martin O.

Many thanks for the socks, have greatly enjoyed wearing them - very warm, don't seem to get "damp" or sweaty. My only complaint would be they are a little bit tight around the leg of the sock. Sandra Y. [this would be where the new women's specific sock might work out better]

I love the flat seam on top of the toes. The fit is absolutely amazing. I can pull them up above the calf and they stay there all day! I have since bought some Lorpen Merino Shorty Light Hiker which really suit my lightweight style. They defenitely are the best socks I have ever owned. Michael S.

Thanks for the socks. They have washed well. The fit around the foot and the extra space for the toes is very comfy. However I found the upper ankle area is a little too tight for the shapely female lower leg. This is the area just below the top band. I have to push them down a bit for comfort and to avoid those sock marks. Laurie B. [the new women's specific sock should fit a lot better]

I have had my pair of Lorpen socks for over a month now; and still get excited each time I put them on. Not only are they hiking socks; but, for the type of work I do, they are excellent for work also. I work for an airline at Christchurch Airport and am constantly on my feet 8 – 10 hours a day walking around the international and domestic terminals assisting our customers on and off various flights. The comfort level of these socks are second to none. If I had to describe what it would feel like to be walking through the clouds without shoes; my first statement would by “You would have to be wearing a pair of Lorpen’s.” Wearing other brands of socks; by the time I get home at night, my feet are stinky and sweating. Not so with the Lorpens. They have a firm grip that ensures they stay up above the ankle and shin, even after all day wear. Once again Bivouac, thank you for the socks, they are great! Pat G.
