We are very excited to be a part of William and Josh's Extraordinary Expedition.
It's quite a change from the flatlands of the Waikato District to the Southern Icefield of Patagonia, but local adventurers, William and Josh are looking forward to their adventure. Their goal to be the first unassisted and unsupported team to make the north to south traverse. They will begin their journey with a 3 day packraft from Tortel togain access to the icefield. They will then undertake a challenging climb and bush-bash to the plateau. Travelling on skis with micro sleds for over 40 days through some of the most rugged and awe inspiring terrain, William and Josh will reach the crux of the journey around the halfway point, a technical descent line down a 600m ice cliff under constant threat of falling seracs. Finally, it’s back in the packrafts again and out to Puerto Natales. Their trip will start with approximately 70kgs of food (with the support of Back Country Cuisine) and equipment (with the support of Bivouac Outdoor and Outdoor Research), so their bodies and minds need to be at their peak for the expedition ahead. We are excited to help this inspirational journey.
Josh studied earth science at The University of Waikato. On finishing the degree, he set a personal goal of crossing the world’s 4 largest ice caps, Arctic, Antarctic, Greenland and the Patagonian Southern Icefield. Having successfully completed the crossing of Greenland in 2014 he has spent the next 6 years working towards the next step - The Patagonian Southern Icefield - It is the most technically demanding and the one with perhaps the worst weather conditions, where extreme wind and annual rainfall are the norm in the meteorological outlook.
William's heroes are Sir Edmund Hillary, Sir Peter Blake, Graeme Dingle - all exceptional New Zealanders starting from humble beginnings and driven by nothing more than curiosity and determination to achieve their goals. Exploring our amazing country has evolved his skills and experience in the outdoors, with every trip revolving around seeing more of the incredible country we call home and pushing his limits.
One of William and Josh’s overarching goals is to be able to use the journey to encourage youth into reconnecting with the outdoors and living active and healthy lives. Josh, through the Kiwi Challenge Foundation is working with secondary school students to promote active and healthy living in their communities.
We are excited about this journey and William and Josh will keep us regularly up to date before, during and after the event via Social Media
