Please be sure to choose the correct width when selecting and ordering footwear. Your feet should be nestled in the footbed. This means that they should not rest on the inside and outside of the footbed edge. Just as with a regular bed - you don't lie on the edge.

The heart of most Birkenstock models is the original BIRKENSTOCK footbed. The construction, which has been thought out to the smallest detail and makes it feel like you're standing in sand, helps your feet feel as comfortable as possible for hours on end. This supports health and promotes wellbeing.
Deep Heel Cup: the very deep moulding in the heel area supports your foot tissue and holds the heel bone firmly in its natural position. This provides your foot with nearly as much support when it is in a sandal as when it is in a closed shoe.
Heel Mould: activates the calf muscles, stabilises the back of your foot and improves gait and coordination.
Interior and Exterior Longitudinal Arch Supports: the arch supports that run alongside the sides of the footbed surround the tarsal bones inside and out. This gives your foot the stability it needs when you take a step.
Traverse Arch Support: the support that runs through the middle of the footbed stabilises the metatarsal bone. In this way, the transverse arch support helps ensure that your foot has a naturally straight and solid stance.
Toe Grip: there are raised indentations at the front of the footbed near the toes. Thanks to the toe grip your toes remain loose and spread out in their natural position. The indentations also support the natural rolling motion of the toes.
Footbed Edge: the footbed is drawn up especially high at the front, as a result the high footbed edge protects your toes during the rolling motion of your foot.
Natural cork is a sustainable, renewable raw material that boasts high elasticity, outstanding cushioning, and excellent heat and sound insulation. The cork layer is reproduced and can therefore be harvested again and again without harming the tree. The cork is obtained from the bark layer of the cork oak. At least five centimetres of thick bark is stripped from the cork oak - a process that, depending on weather conditions, can only be repeated every seven to nine years. A single tree can provide 100 to 200 kilograms of cork during its life. To ensure that the cork is hygienically clean, the bark that has been removed is cooked thoroughly in tanks.
Natural latex serves as a primary binding agent in the production of the footbed. Like cork, natural latex is also a renewable resource. Natural latex is obtained from the resin of rubber trees. The latex milk that is emitted from the trees is collected in small buckets. This process does not occur for the first time until the trees have matured to six years old. From then on, a rubber tree will provide about 80 grams of latex each and every day for 25 years. This delicate natural material has a much better energy balance than synthetic latex, which is obtained from crude oil, and it's also free from pollutants such as solvents or CFCs. In addition, natural latex has very beneficial natural properties, such as a high elasticity-point and superior breathability.
