The Patagonia Houdini Jacket is an excellent packable light weight wind shell ideal to stow into its top chest pocket and carry in your pants pocket as it is compressible and mailable. It also has a small carry tab for fitting on your finger. Super quick and easy to put on when you need to keep out a cool breeze and ideal for walking. It's a versatile jacket and I love it so much I have 3 of them! I'd recommend this to anyone who does a lot of walking especially in late spring or early autumn, or even summers evening to keep the breeze off. The only minor limitation is the size of the chest pocket - it is big enough to stow the entire jacket but too small for most phones.

The Patagonia Houdini Jacket is an excellent packable light weight wind shell ideal to stow into its top chest pocket and carry in your pants pocket as it is compressible and mailable. It also has a small carry tab for fitting on your finger. Super quick and easy to put on when you need to keep out a cool breeze and ideal for walking. The Stormracer Shell is the breathable, packable and waterproof shell you've been searching for high aerobic activity. A more breathable option than 2.5L running jackets, the Stormracer's 3L construction will keep you dry while avoiding that clammy condensation feeling so many jackets come with. Ideal for trail running, the Stormracer finds use for cyclers and fast-packers alike. Those wanting an extremely light rain-coat for their day hikes may find this as a good option - but should note that this has a very minimalist design, lacking volume/structure in the hood and no waist pockets - not intended for alpine conditions or severe weather.

You can't go past Gore-Tex performance and this is paired with all the features like the helmet compatible hood and high pockets which make it really nice to use in alpine environments with a helmet and harness on. It's equally as good as a tramping shell and it packs down sufficiently small. It's not the lightest jacket, so won't be fit for those looking to shave all the grams they can and it can be a bit 'crunchy' as the face fabric is a bit heavier.

Expert Opinion

I think this is one of the best value shells out there, at home in the back country as much as it is around town. With a 20000mm waterhead and great quality seam sealing, you're sure to stay dry in NZ conditions. I feel the 3 layer construction really sets this one apart from others in the same price range, and it's more comfortable and less bin bag feeling than some 2 and 2.5 layer jackets. My only gripe about this one is the lower breathability rating, which means it can get a bit stuffy, but the good sized pit zips allow a nice bit of air flow. Would reccomend to anyone looking for a quality, versatile shell at a great price, who want to us it in the back country and around town.
