The Scarpa Ribelle HD is my pick for alpine climbing when a long approach is required or for extended backcountry travel. This is because the sole has the rigidity required for optimal crampon fit and stability in rough terrain, while combining a distinct underfoot rocker to aid in walking. While the lower volume fit makes this boot incredibility precise for a mountain boot and excels in rock and mixed climbing, some may find the more relaxed fit and flatter rocker of a heavier boot such as the Scarpa Manta Tech, less restrictive and offering a flatter, perhaps more secure crampon fit. For general mountaineering deep in the New Zealand bush, the Ribelle HD is hard to beat.

Fit tip:
True to size
  • ARG last: has low volume technical precision, but with a noticeable toe spring, giving a much more natural and fluid gait
  • Perwanger 2.5mm water-repellent suede upper with water-repellent microfibre inserts
  • Sock-Fit XT system wraps the foot like a sock
  • Protective rand in PU on the outside to increase lightness and rubber on the inside and on the toe for greater protection
  • The upper construction together with the sole ensures maximum precision and durability, supporting and cushioning the foot.
  • Laminated lining with HDry® and 37.5® fabric technology for greater comfort and waterproofing
  • Combination of PU Tek and rubber rand give the optimum blend of weight saving and reinforced protection
  • Speed Lacing system for an accurate and comfortable fit without constrictions
  • Pro Fiber Roll insole in polypropylene and anatomical and structural fibreglass with differentiated thicknesses, lightweight and with different anti-torsional strengths. Maximum performance, stability and comfort.
  • Pentax Precision Roll sole designed by SCARPA® and developed in collaboration with Vibram® gives you a lightweight, cushioned, technical sole
  • Compatible with semi-automatic crampons

The Lowa Alpine Expert II is the boot I'd recommend to those looking for a mountaineering boot with the utmost in features. The Alpine Expert II most notably supports fully automatic crampons with both front and rear crampon bails. This means this boot supports use of a higher end range of crampon. Additionally, this boot comes equipped nice features found on other premium Lowa boots such as roller eyelets, X-lacing hook, etc. While fully featured, some may want to consider a lighter boot for certain adventures as the Alpine Expert II puts features and durability first.

Fit tip:
True to size
  • GORE-TEX® waterproof/breathable membrane plus 400g PrimaLoft® synthetic insulation provide weather protection and warmth
  • Mountaineering split leather and microfibre uppers are robust, durable, open-pored for breathability while remaining water resistant and combine with DuraPU® midsoles for long-lasting wear
  • Anatomically-hsaped C4 tongue reduces pressure on your instep and allows for improved flex and comfort
  • X-Lacing® reduces tongue movement and prevents pressure and blisters from forming
  • Roller eyelets allow for quick and easy lacing with minimal friction
  • Flexfit Synchro® plus Flexfit® allow your foot to roll forward thus saving you strength when going uphill and providing noticeable comfort

Manta Tech's are my recommendation for a first pair of crampon ready mountain boots. This is because they have excellent crampon fit; a wider, more relaxed fit for comfort during long days in the mountains; sufficient warmth for the majority of NZ conditions; and good ankle support for confidence front pointing. While some may be inclined to go with a lighter option for increased speed and precision, the Manta Tech's are capable enough to not require upgrading in the near future and durable enough to inherit from your grandfather.

Fit tip:
True to size
  • FT Last
  • 3mm water-resistant Perwanger Suede leather upper
  • GORE-TEX® Insulated Comfort lining for durable warmth
  • Tall, ergonomic, padded collar reduces impact stress on the Achilles and malleolus area providing support and comfort with its Flex Point system allowing your ankles complete freedom of movement wile maintaining support
  • Lacing: lower eyelets allow fast adjustment and fitting with a single movement while the upper section has a lace lock that allows tension to be customised for comfort
  • Full perimeter combination rand of rubber and PU for abrasion resistance
  • Multi-density PU midsole provides support and cushioning
  • TPU heel insert ensures a solid interface with semi-automatic crampons
  • Vibram® outsole in Mont rubber gives long lasting traction and security
