How to Layer Outdoor Clothing

Learn how base layers, mid layers, shells, and belay layers work together to keep you warm, dry, and comfortable in changing New Zealand conditions.

If you’re looking to stay warm and dry in the back country there’s no one stop answer. The raincoat is the iconic piece of protection from the elements, but what’s underneath can matter more to your comfort in the outdoors. 

New Zealand backcountry weather changes fast, and your body does too. You're sweating hard on the climb, then standing around freezing at the tops, then sweating again on the descent. Add in a river crossing, a change in elevation, or an afternoon southerly rolling in out of nowhere, and you have a lot of conditions your clothing and you must cope with in a single day. 

A layering system is what lets you manage that cycle without overheating or getting chilled. It's not about a single silver bullet, it’s about understanding that each layer has one job, and building a system where every piece has its place. 

Here's what each layer does, why it matters, and what to look for when you're building a system that works for you.

Base Layer: Moisture Management

Your base layer's main job is to move sweat off your skin. It's not really there to keep you warm, that's the next layer's job, it's there to keep you dry. It’ll be the layer your feeling all day long, something comfortable and dry will make for a much more pleasant trip no matter what the backcountry throws at you. 

This dry next to skin layer matters more than most people realise. Damp skin loses heat far faster than dry skin, and in cold, exposed conditions that's how trampers end up in real trouble. You can be wearing a great insulating layer and a solid shell, but if your base layer is holding onto sweat instead of moving it away, you're still going to get cold fast when you stop moving. 

Both merino and synthetic base layers do this job well, and which one suits you comes down to the activity, the trip length, and personal preference rather than one being universally better.

Merino Base Layers

Merino has the edge on warmth and next-to-skin comfort, and it manages a range of temperature well because the fibres actually absorb sweat rather than just pushing it to the surface. It's also genuinely odour resistant, so on a multi-day trip you can wear the same top for several days running without it turning rank. The tradeoffs are that merino is slower to dry, doesn't hold up as well to hard, repeated wear, and can cost more. 


Synthetic Base Layers

Synthetic base layers breathe a little better and dry much faster, since they push moisture out to the surface rather than absorbing it, which counts for a lot if you're working hard, crossing rivers, or need a layer to dry overnight at a hut. They're also more durable and often more affordable. The downside is they can begin to smell over multiple days, and don't have merino’s next to skin comfort.

As a rough guide, merino suits lower-output tramping, camp clothes, and multi-day trips where doing laundry isn't an option. Synthetic suits high-output days, warmer conditions, or anyone who runs hot and sweats heavily. Weight matters too, whichever fabric you choose. A lightweight base layer suits high-output days and warmer conditions, while a heavier weight makes sense for alpine trips, slower activities, or anyone who runs cold.

Mid Layer: Insulation

The mid layer's job is to trap the warm air your body generates. This is your actual insulation, and the best mid layers do this while still letting water vapour escape, otherwise you’ll end up feeling clammy and cold when you do slow down. 

Which type suits you comes down to the conditions, how hard you're working, and what you need it to do. 

Fleece

Fleece is the most versatile, breathable option. It stays warm even when damp, dries quickly, and breathes well enough to wear while you're still moving, which makes it a solid choice for an active mid layer. It doesn't block wind on its own though, so it always needs a shell over the top once conditions turn. 


Down Insulation

Down offers the best warmth for its weight of any insulation and is also the most compressible. This matters on a multi-day trip where every gram counts. It's the standout choice for cold, static conditions, camp in the evening, high-altitude stops, or anywhere warmth without bulk is the priority. The tradeoff is that down loses much of its insulating power when it gets properly wet and takes a long time to dry out, though many modern down jackets now use a water-resistant treatment that holds up far better in damp conditions than untreated down used to. 

Synthetic Insulation

Synthetic insulation trades a little of that warmth-to-weight advantage for reliability in wet weather. It keeps insulating even when damp and dries faster than down, which makes it the safer bet for New Zealand's wetter tramping conditions or for anyone who sweats heavily into their mid layer. 

Something else to consider it that synthetic fill jackets and fleeces are easy to care for, just throw them in the washing machine with some Nik Wax and it’ll come out like new, much easier than the washing and drying the equivalent down jacket. 

A good rule of thumb: if you're working hard and generating heat, prioritise breathability, and fleece usually wins. If you're stopped, exposed, or the temperature is dropping fast, prioritise warmth, and that's where down or synthetic insulation earns its place in the pack.

Outer Layer: Weather Protection

Your outer layer protects the rest of your clothing system from wind, rain, and snow.

In New Zealand, conditions can change quickly, particularly around exposed ridgelines, alpine environments, and the western sides of the main ranges.

Waterproof Hardshell Jackets

The shell blocks wind, rain, and snow before it reaches your other layers, and in New Zealand, the weather can turn without much warning at all.

Hardshell raincoats are fully waterproof and windproof. They are the iconic piece of outdoor protection, built around a membrane or coating with taped seams, a durable face fabric, and a feature set that matches your chosen activity.

They are worthy of an entire blog themselves, and there is a lot to unpack, but the main thing to remember is that they work best when the layers underneath are performing too. A shell may be keeping rain out, but if your base and mid layers are holding onto sweat or not moving moisture effectively, you can still end up feeling damp and cold. When someone is having trouble staying comfortable in their shell, what they are wearing underneath is often the first place we look.

Alternative Outer Layers

A waterproof hardshell is not the only outer layer available. Different jackets balance protection, breathability, warmth, weight, and freedom of movement in different ways.

Softshell Jackets

Softshells trade some of that weatherproofing for stretch and breathability, handling wind and some moisture without being fully waterproof. They suit high-output days in drier conditions, fast hiking, climbing, or ski touring, where dumping heat matters more than sealing out a downpour.  

Wind Shells

Wind shells are the lightest, most packable option, blocking wind and keeping off a light shower or flurry of snow. A great layer when moving fast but not enough protection for when the weather turns. 

Insulated Shells

Insulated shells merge your mid and outer layer into one warm, waterproof jacket. Convenient, but bulkier and less adjustable than layering separately. A great option for winter sports, or the city when the one coat layering system’s lack of flexibility is not a real cost. 

The Belay Layer: Extra Insurance for Stationary Cold

There's a fourth layer worth knowing, even though it doesn't fit the base, mid, and outer system. It comes from climbing, where it's called a belay jacket or belay parka, and it's just as useful for serious alpine tramping. 

The problem it solves is simple: your body generates far less heat standing still than it does when working hard. A climber can be warm on the pitch, then get properly cold within minutes stopping to belay, even in a full base, mid, and outer system. The same thing happens to trampers on an exposed crossing, during a long rest, waiting out bad weather or when something goes wrong. 

A belay layer is a heavily insulated jacket, usually synthetic since it keeps working when damp, built to throw on over everything else, shell included, without removing other layers first. That's why specific belay jackers are cut oversized, roomy enough to fit over a harness, climbing gear, or a helmet, so you can get warm again in seconds. The key is that you don’t have to remove your vital shell layer to put it on, so you don’t loose all that heat contained in your other layers. 

For most day trampers this isn't essential kit, but for multi-day or alpine trips where you might be stationary at altitude, exposed to wind, or waiting for help in an emergency, it's genuine insurance.

Building Your System

None of these layers work in isolation. A great shell over a cotton tee won't keep you warm. The best merino base layer in the world won't help if the rain gets through to it because your shell isn't up to the job. 

The system only works when every layer is doing its job, and the real beauty of it is flexibility. You can add layers or strip them back as the weather changes and your effort level shifts through the day, climbing hard in just a base layer, throwing on a mid layer at the tops, and pulling the shell over the top the moment the wind or rain sets in. 

When you’re looking for new layers, think how they will work with the other layers, are the pockets accessible, is there going to be a lot of bulk if all they’re all full. Do the hoods interact well, often it’s best to try one layer on with the others before you buy. Do Not Forget Your Extremities

Your hands, feet, head, and neck are often the first places where you notice the cold.

A warm beanie, appropriate socks, gloves, and neckwear are just as much a part of your clothing system as your jackets.

The right accessories can also be easier to add and remove during the day, helping you regulate temperature without stopping to change your entire clothing system.
