All the best things about the Ranger III, with upgrades to make the ideal boot for North Island hunters and trampers carrying heavy packs. Stiff enough to support heavy loads and fit crampons if needed, while remaining comfortable. The addition of the locking lace eyelets allows to split the lacing into 2 zones and loosen above the top of the foot, which I find great with a high arch.

Beloved boot of backcountry enthusiasts! This boot consists of a sole with just enough flex at the crease to remain incredibly comfortable on track, and in off track scrambles with stability from the ground up. Suitable for pack weights over 25kg this rugged boot has a rand circling the boot protecting the nubuck suede from damage in off track environments. Metal balls in the forward lacing of the boot allow laces to slide smoothly achieving ease in tight boot lacing, paired with the lace lock in the centre tongue of the boot, you can ensure a secure comfortable fit in the relatively wide fit boot.

• Nubuck leather upper: 2.2-2.4mm full grain sanded nubuck leather upper is robust and durable to extend the life of your boots. It's also open pored for breathability while remaining fully waterproof.
• GORE-TEX® lining allows for moisture and sweat to escape while preventing water from entering from the outside
• Anatomically left and right shaped C4 Tongue reduces pressure on the instep and allows for improved flex and comfort

The definitive boot for the rugged terrain of the New Zealand backcountry. The Tibet Evo offers a high degree of stability and support necessary for those hunting in the higher elevations or off trail in dense bush. The full length 5mm nylon shank makes gaining ground in steep terrain easier by 'climbing on the toes' and being able to kick steps into loose ground. Likewise, the rigidity of the Tibet Evo allows fast decent on moraine. However, with this level of support, walking on well groomed trail may prove less comfortable than a boot with more flex, such as the Lowa Renegade. But for those who demand performance and reliability in big terrain, the Lowa Tibet Evo is a solid option.

The Scarpa Ribelle HD is my pick for alpine climbing when a long approach is required or for extended backcountry travel. This is because the sole has the rigidity required for optimal crampon fit and stability in rough terrain, while combining a distinct underfoot rocker to aid in walking. While the lower volume fit makes this boot incredibility precise for a mountain boot and excels in rock and mixed climbing, some may find the more relaxed fit and flatter rocker of a heavier boot such as the Scarpa Manta Tech, less restrictive and offering a flatter, perhaps more secure crampon fit. For general mountaineering deep in the New Zealand bush, the Ribelle HD is hard to beat.

Manta Tech's are my recommendation for a first pair of crampon ready mountain boots. This is because they have excellent crampon fit; a wider, more relaxed fit for comfort during long days in the mountains; sufficient warmth for the majority of NZ conditions; and good ankle support for confidence front pointing. While some may be inclined to go with a lighter option for increased speed and precision, the Manta Tech's are capable enough to not require upgrading in the near future and durable enough to inherit from your grandfather.
