Designed in the Pacific North West with conditions similar to our West Coast, the Headwall is a great 3 layer jacket for New Zealand environment. The durable shell boasts a waterproof centre front and chest pocket zips and draw chord hem with shaping that scoops down at the back to cover the butt. Side seam underarm zips allow for a little ventilation, or a lot of ventilation, with the option to unzip the side seam entirely in wet but muggy conditions. The thickness of the jacket makes it suitable for tramping as it can handle typical tramping pack loads. Various adjustments allow a custom fit of the helmet compatible hood from those climbing into the mountains to weekend warriers.

Lightweight, 3 layer, fully seam sealed waterproof and windproof jacket. The Patagonia Storm Racer has it all. This jacket is specifically designed for high intensity activities like running or biking. Due to its lightweight nature, I would not recommend this product to people looking for a hiking jacket they will be wearing under a heavy pack.

But if you are a runner, cyclist or fast packer this jacket is definitely going to be one of the two best options I'd recommend you go for in Bivouac (the other one being The North Face Summit series superior future light jacket). It isn't easy to find a running jacket that is 3 layers and that makes a huge difference to your experience. The 3rd layer will protect that laminate from your sweat and from wear and tear. It will be much more comfortable to wear if you're wearing a singlet or short sleeves and will breathe better.
This jacket is affordable while delivering excellent results.

Pluma is a jacket well designed for the mountains! The 3 Layer GORE-TEX shell is rigid and crinkly to wear, meaning it stands up well in harsh environments above the bush line. All external zips are waterproof from the two-way centre front to under arm ventilation zips. Hand pockets sit higher to allow easy access when worn with a harness and hip belts of a pack. Two of the three internal pockets are zipped, one of which is hidden inside the wearer's left chest pocket. It's helmet compatible hood provides full peripheral vision and almost covers the nose when fully zipped up. While the hood offers great protection in a downpour, coverage was not so great when paired with the helmet in the same conditions. Layering is important for maximum breathability, but a well designed, hardy athletic fit jacket that is true to size.
