I LOVE that it opens in halves with a good amount of pockets and mesh compartments to keep your items tucked nicely away. I’m also a huge fan of the handles on the top and side as well as the backpack straps, as it feels like I’m on the cusp of being too short to comfortably wear this (about 170cm tall). Love the robust fabric and strong smooth zips, huge fan overall of this bag as a sturdy travel buddy.

Alright all of you carry-on only travel enthusiasts - this bag may just be the answer to all your needs. An impressive 1.06kg, Air NZ and Jet Star won't be stopping you at the gate for exceeding your 7kg limit - or maybe they will if you still overpack. Opens just like a suitcase, this bag is convenient to pack, has heaps of organization and can be synched smaller on the outside. Best part? It has a drink bottle holder!!! No more carrying your bottle through the airport as you sprint to make that connecting flight. I think the only thing that would make it slightly better would be more structure in the walls, but that would mean a heavier weight - win some you lose some.

* You should still double check it meets cabin dimensions but there is a 35L version if you need a smaller option.

The Soujourn Porter is a great travel bag if you’re looking for slightly more volume or more organization compared to the Fairview 40L. This is one of the only travel bags with a drink bottle holder, which you don’t realize how good of a feature it is until you’re lugging your drink bottle everywhere or have it banging around clipped to the outside. The back panel isn’t as breathable as others and it’s a fixed torso length so may not be as comfortable for everyone.
Having used this bag on a few trips I loved how durable the outer fabric was as it has a bit more structure/shape – but on smaller planes did struggle occasionally to fit it in the overhead bins, never had an issue on international flights. I’d recommend this bag more to people using it for urban/short term travel, as if you over pack it for a longer trip you may need to check it in.

As a gal who is about 170cm tall, I find that this bag is pushing it as to what I can comfortably wear on my back. If I don’t have the hip straps on, even with the backpack straps tightened I find it sits too low down and ends up angling awkwardly and gapping on my lower back. If I have it done up on the waist, it sits much more comfortably but is cusping on being too high up on my neck/back of my head. While it’s a super convenient and multifunctional bag, I wouldn’t recommend for any average-to-short ladies.

Fit tip:

If you're like me, and avoid baggage fees at all costs, this is one for you. They don't call it the Black Hole for nothing, it's deceivingly big and fits more than you'd imagine, but still has heaps of organisation within it. The full clamshell opening is ideal once you get to your destination and the admin compartment has a laptop sleeve and spots for your passport and documents. Although it has a weather-proof PU coating on the material on the face, the location of the zips create spots for water to enter, so best to use a pack cover or put those important bits in dry bags if the weathers going to be particularly grim.
