The Alpha SV Jacket is a proven performer in severe alpine conditions, redesigned with a 100D face fabric made from 100% recycled content and a construction to extend life and simplify repair. It is made with durable, breathable GORE-TEX® PRO fabric with Most Rugged Technology for long-lasting storm protection, a Micro Grid Backer to enhance resistance to abrasion and contamination and a RECCO® reflector for safety on the slopes. Other features include a helmet-compatible hood, pit zips, articulated construction and pack and harness-compatible pockets.

The Arc'teryx Alpha SV is a high-performance alpine jacket.

The SV (Severe) model is heavier and presents a higher denier face fabric than the regular Alpha model. The use of Gore-Tex Pro fabric provides added abrasion resistance as well as high breathability, while keeping water and wind out with effect. The SV model will be overkill for the conditions that most would go out in, but will hold up on mixed routes and for those who put a beating on their jackets.
This jacket only has a one-way front zip and I find that the zipper pulls are hard to use with gloves on. The front pockets are good for use with a harness but as they are the only pockets, they do provide limitations for seeking shelter for your hands in regular use. This jacket uses the Arc'teryx "storm hood" that caters for use with a helmet, a hood that is too large for non-alpine use.

I've used this jacket in alpine conditions, and will not interfere with use in a harness, but doesn't share some of the comforts with more hiking-oriented jackets. This jacket held up great on the pinnacle traverse at Ruapehu last season, and it makes for a great hardshell, as I've found the jacket compacts nicely without creasing.

Fit Tip: Athletic fit, fits large to allow for layers, but recommend sizing up if it is too tight around hips.

The laminated brim and hood adjusters secure tightly and deliver full coverage without restricting movement or visibility. It has a laminated brim, adjustable hood cinch cords and a tall collar for full coverage.

They consist of a diode and an antenna and are designed to last a lifetime - they do not age or wear out. If not mechanically damaged they will last forever.

bluesign® approved materials: The bluesign® system is the solution for a sustainable textile production. It eliminates harmful substances right from the beginning of the manufacturing process and sets and controls standards for an environmentally friendly and safe production. This not only ensures that the final textile product meets very stringent consumer safety requirements worldwide but also provides you the confidence you'll acquire a sustainable product. Those operating sustainably - meaning conserving resources and reducing the environmental impact to a minimum - also act responsibly and innovatively. Wanting to produce sustainable goods though involves a detailed examination of all materials and processes used as well as the impact of the production on the environment. Only this holistic observation, which starts well before the actual production, will guarantee a final product that is harmless to human beings and the environment. The standard covers 5 principles:

  • Resource productivity: defines the ecological and economical goal to produce textile products of maximum quality and added value, using a minimum amount of resources as well as causing the least possible environmental impact.
  • Air emission: air emissions need to comply with strictly controlled emission limits along the entire production chain. Optimising the energy flow as well as using low-emission components reduces the CO2 load, implicating active climate protection.
  • Occupational health and safety: the health and safety of employees in the textile industry has to be safeguarded by strict guidelines. Weak points occurring locally must be detected. In accordance with the risk potential of the deployed chemical substances, corresponding occupational safety measures are mandatory.
  • Water emission: control aims at feeding back purified water into the natural cycle and causing the least possible pollution of rivers, lakes and seas. This can be achieved by the use of ecologically harmless components as well as by optimising production and wastewater treatment processes.
  • Consumer safety: includes not only the mandate for high-quality textile products without health risks but also the assurance that all of the principles of sustainability are consistently implemented during the production process.
