Solution Dyed: is a process where dye is added to the liquid polymer before the fibre is extruded. The benefit of this technology is that energy and water use as well as CO2 emissions are significantly reduced. In solution dyeing, the colour runs throughout the yarn, not just on the surface as it would with conventional dyeing. This is easy to imagine if you think of the cross section of a carrot (colour throughout) compared to a radish (colour only on the exterior). Solution-dyed colours may not be quite as intense, but they also do not fade like conventionally-dyed materials.

Air Frame construction: the cross-cores (longitudinal and transverse) provide a level of stability previously unknown in self-inflating mats. This construction radically reduces the bounce commonly found in PU foam mats.

XPEL Valve: was the first valve developed specifically for self-inflating sleeping mats. It integrates a one-way inflate port, a large deflate port and a fine-tune button into a single, low-profile unit. The genius of the XPEL valve is that to deflate the sleeping mat, the valve is flipped over, allowing air to escape but not return into the mat. This turns the one-way inflate valve into a one-way deflate valve- preventing the mat from drawing itself full of air as it is rolled up. The XPEL valve fits the nozzle of an Airstreamâ„¢ pump (sold separately) if you want to 'top up' your self-inflating mat which you can also do manually.

ASTM F3340 R-value testing: To ensure that you will be warm when you sleep (especially when the ground is colder), it is essential to know how well your sleeping mat resists heat loss into the ground. This resistance is known as an R-Value. A laboratory-tested R-Value is the only way to measure resistance to heat loss. Sea to Summit has always provided independent lab-tested R-Values for its sleeping mats. Since January 2020 they have used the industry standard ASTM F3340 test to provide R-Values for their mats. There are several other factors which will determine how well a sleeping mat will insulate, but the standardized ASTM R-Value test means you can compare resistance to heat loss in sleeping mats across different brands.
